Life, Freedom, and Bind Runes...a blend of tradition and innovation.
What is a Bind Rune?
A bind rune (Old Norse bandrún, meaning "bound rune") is a Norse magical seal
created by superimposing two or more Elder Futhark runes into a single composite glyph.
Each component contributes its own meaning to the magical operation,
and the bind rune itself becomes a unique sign that encapsulates the combined energy.
This is an ancient practice.
Bind runes appear on Viking Age artifacts
—talismans, weapon hilts, doorposts, ship prows, runestones—
and the tradition has survived through Icelandic folk magic
(grimoires between the 17th and 19th centuries) to modern usage.
Today, they are used exactly as they were a thousand years ago:
drawn, engraved, or traced with intention and charged through the very act of their creation.
Bind runes differ from individual runes in two fundamental ways.
First, they are created intentionally rather than simply drawn:
the runes to be combined are chosen based on a specific need,
rather than being drawn randomly as happens during a divinatory reading.
Second, they represent a magical action rather than a simple meaning:
a bind rune "does" something, not simply "says" something.
The Algiz rune means "protection"; the bind rune of protection, on the other hand, protects.
For our new art collection, we also drew inspiration from ancient Norse traditions,
to enhance the union between art, craftsmanship, and everyday life, often embodied in the convivial moment of a dinner.
Stay tuned.
